After a very successful career as a business owner, Lucy Kelly had taken a few years off to do other things –knowing, however, that if the right opportunity came along she’d jump right back into business ownership. She had a wealth of experience to rely on and she was confident in her business savvy.
That opportunity came along …
… and it all started with a purchase Lucy made, her need to return that purchase via UPS, and the required 25-minute drive into Burlington to do so. As Lucy was driving from La Conner to Burlington, she thought to herself, “It seems to me that I shouldn’t have to make this drive. It’s really too bad there’s not somewhere local to drop this package off for return-shipment.”
The further Lucy drove along, the more she thought about the idea of a local postal and business center. A place where people could ship and return packages via FedEx. A business center where customers could have access to wireless service, a computer and a high-quality color copier.
It didn’t take Lucy long to know that she’d found her new opportunity – and the more she thought about it the more excited she became. What else did La Conner residents and visitors need? She started asking around.

Lucy’s new business idea was about to take flight, and she couldn’t have been happier. Her next need was space, and as luck would have it the perfect space was available in the Tillinghast retail center. Located on the site of the original 1885 Tillinghast Seed Company building, which was the welcome-mat for La Conner for more than 100 years, the new Tillinghast retail center includes the same turn-of-the-century charm of the original building – combined with high-quality construction, high-tech features, and abundant parking.
Today, you’ll find Lucy and her staff busy behind the counter selling competitively-priced business and home-office supplies, packing and shipping everything from the smallest piece of jewelry to most-fragile large artwork, printing and binding business and school reports, taking passport photos, and securely housing materials ready for shredding.
You’ll also find Lucy smiling her thousand-watt smile, confident in the knowledge that her one simple trip to return a package has gone from a ‘what if’ idea, to another successfully launched businesses –Tillinghast Postal and Business Center.
