Get to know the Swinomish Casino …

Across the channel from the town of La Conner is the reservation home of the Swinomish Tribe –a community of Coast Salish peoples descended from groups and bands originating from the Skagit and Samish River valleys, coastal areas surrounding nearby bays and waters, and numerous islands including Fidalgo, Camano, Whidbey and the San Juan Islands.

While fishing the waters of the Puget Sound has always been an economic resource for the Tribe, expanding their economic base to create additional employment opportunities has been at the forefront for the past 25 years.

In June of 1985, the Swinomish Northern Lights Casino – at the north end of the Swinomish Channel and at the edge of Padilla Bay just off of Highway 20 – officially opened with an elaborate ceremony. The original bingo hall employed upwards of 75 tribal members and provided a much-needed revenue stream for the tribal community.

In 1995 the Tribe received a Class III Gaming license – allowing the addition of Vegas-style gambling at the casino. As business and revenue grew, so did the Tribe’s ability to use the revenue stream to support many tribal endeavors including improved medical and dental clinics, creation of a fitness center, a housing development program, a Northwest Indian College satellite campus, and to support  local organizations including Relay for Life and the local Boys & Girls Club.

These days, the Swinomish Casino employs nearly 300 and features casual and fine-dining restaurants, a 35-space RV Park, 755 slot machines, 16 table games including Poker, Blackjack, Pai Gow, Craps & Roulette, Keno and a 300-seat bingo hall. Additionally, the casino brings in well-known bands and comedians several times a year.

An exciting development is the addition of the new 98-room Lodge, designed by Walsh Bishop of Minneapolis. The Lodge has 4 suites, 73 king and 21 double-queen rooms, the majority of which capture the spectacular views of Padilla Bay, Mount Baker and the San Juan Islands. There is also a 25-seat wine bar and the 13moons restaurant which features an exhibition kitchen with menu items and selections based on available seasonal meats, seafood and produce from the surrounding area. According to Tribal Chairman Brian Cladoosby, “We believe it is very important to provide our guests with the finest and freshest local meats and seafood, harvested by tribal fisherman, accompanied by fresh produce cultivated by farms in our region.”

In addition to the gaming opportunities, the casino expansion consists of more than 9000 square feet of convention and meeting space, which will benefit meeting planners looking for options near Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. “The hotels location, natural beauty, designs and enhanced amenities will make this one of the finest casino hotels in the region,” says Cladoosby.

As a truly quintessential Northwest getaway destination, La Conner is well known throughout the Western U.S. and Canada. Now, with the expansion of the Swinomish Casino and Lodge and the expanded gaming and dining opportunities, there are even more reasons to come to stay and play in La Conner!
